Wernick started acting in Community Theater as a child growing up in Dallas, Texas. He continued his pursuit of acting while attending the prestigious all boys St. Mark's School of Texas.

Although renowned for its rigorous academics as a college preparatory school, St. Mark's has also been the breeding ground for alumni who have pursued careers in entertainment such as musicians: Steve Miller, Boz Scaggs, and Rhett Miller, producers Mike Macari and Keven McAlester, director/producer brothers Craig Zisk and Randy Zisk, as well as actors Tommy Lee Jones, and brothers, Andrew Wilson, Owen Wilson, and Luke Wilson.

Upon passing the Texas Bar, Wernick moved to New York City to pursue a career in entertainment. He honed his skills in musical theater and voice training as well as trained under the tutelage of Uta Hagen at HB Studio in New York.

Although he had several successes acting in television commercials while living in New York, he had little success breaking into movies.
